Punjab Government Ends Free Travel Facility on Public Transport from Tomorrow

Free Travel Relief Package Concludes

The Punjab government has decided to end the free travel facility on Metro Bus, Orange Line Train, Speedo, and Electric Bus services from tomorrow. Nearly 800,000 passengers had been benefiting from the initiative on a daily basis. The free travel service was introduced in April 2026 under a public relief package aimed at providing financial support to citizens amid rising inflation.

Ticket System to Be Restored

According to the Punjab Mass Transit Authority, the regular ticketing system will be restored in Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Multan starting tomorrow. Passengers traveling on Metro Bus, Orange Line, Speedo, and Electric Bus services will once again have to pay fares. Authorities stated that ticketing systems at stations and transport routes have been fully reactivated ahead of the decision’s implementation.

Public Reaction and Concerns

The decision has triggered mixed reactions among citizens. Many commuters said the free travel facility had become a major relief during difficult economic conditions and increasing living costs. Others believe the government may have faced financial challenges in continuing the subsidy for a longer period. Experts say the restoration of fares could increase daily transportation expenses for thousands of regular commuters across Punjab.
