The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has launched a major infrastructure project worth Rs7.4 billion to construct a new dual carriageway along the Islamabad Expressway.
The nine-kilometer road will replace the existing service road and connect Faizabad with the Gulberg Greens stop. The project includes three lanes on each side and is aimed at improving traffic flow and connectivity on one of Islamabad’s busiest corridors.
The groundbreaking ceremony was performed by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, who directed authorities to complete the project within 90 days. However, officials say the timeline remains ambitious given the scale of the work.
According to CDA sources, more than 600 encroachments and structures fall within the project’s alignment, while dozens of electricity poles will also need to be relocated. Officials are additionally reviewing the relocation of graves that may be affected by the road expansion.
The project is being executed through a government-to-government (G2G) arrangement under public procurement rules, replacing an earlier plan that involved competitive bidding among private contractors.
Officials believe the new carriageway will ease congestion, improve road safety, and support Islamabad’s growing transportation needs. Further details regarding future development plans along the Islamabad Expressway corridor are expected to emerge in the coming months.
