The long-delayed Iran-Pakistan (IP) Gas Pipeline project appears to be gaining fresh momentum as Tehran and Islamabad renew discussions on regional energy cooperation.
According to recent reports, Iran has expressed its willingness to move forward with the project, which has remained stalled for years due to international sanctions, financing challenges, and regulatory hurdles.
Often referred to as the “Peace Pipeline,” the project is designed to transport natural gas from Iran to Pakistan, helping address Pakistan’s growing energy needs while strengthening economic ties between the two neighboring countries.
Iran has already completed its section of the pipeline up to the Pakistan border. However, construction on Pakistan’s side has faced repeated delays despite multiple commitments over the years.
The renewed push comes amid improving diplomatic engagement in the region and growing interest in enhancing long-term energy security. Analysts believe the project could help Pakistan diversify its energy sources, reduce supply pressures, and support industrial growth.
In 2024, Pakistan approved work on an initial segment of the pipeline within its territory, signaling its intention to keep the project alive despite ongoing challenges.
Officials from both countries are expected to continue technical consultations in the coming weeks, focusing on implementation frameworks, financing arrangements, and future timelines.
While significant hurdles remain, the latest developments have raised hopes that one of South Asia’s most ambitious energy projects could finally move closer to reality.
