PPP Takes Early Lead in Gilgit-Baltistan Elections as PML-N Stays Strong in Close Contest

GILGIT:

The political race in Gilgit-Baltistan is heating up after the June 7 elections, with the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) emerging as the leading party based on unofficial and preliminary results. Meanwhile, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) is giving tough competition and holding key positions in several constituencies.

After a closely fought election across the region’s 24 general seats, no single party has secured an outright majority, setting the stage for coalition talks.

Current Seat Position (Unofficial Results)

• Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP): 10 seats — Leading
• Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N): 6 seats — Strong second
• PTI-backed Independents: 2 seats — Influential in tight races
• Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM): 1 seat — Regional presence
• Other Independents: 5 seats — Potential kingmakerst

To form the government in the 33-member Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly (including reserved seats for women and technocrats), a party or alliance needs 17 seats. Since no party has reached this number on its own, the final government will depend on post-election alliances.

PPP Gains Ground, PML-N Holds Steady

The PPP has made a strong comeback in this election, improving its position from 5 seats in the previous assembly to 10 this time. Party leaders credit their performance to an active campaign focused on development, jobs, and greater regional rights.

On the other hand, the PML-N, led locally by Hafiz Hafeezur Rehman, has secured 6 important seats. While they are not in the lead, the party remains a key player and is expected to be central in upcoming coalition negotiations.

Coalition Politics Ahead

With no clear majority, attention now shifts to independent candidates and smaller parties, who could play a decisive role in forming the next government in Gilgit-Baltistan.

The final outcome will depend on alliances formed in the coming days, as political negotiations intensify across the region.
