Tragic Loss of Lives in the Mediterranean: 53 Migrants Dead or Missing After Shipwreck Off Libya

Introduction:

The central Mediterranean Sea has once again become the scene of a devastating humanitarian tragedy. At least 53 migrants, including two infants, are confirmed dead or missing after a small rubber boat capsized off the coast of Libya, according to the United Nations’ International Organization for Migration (IOM). The incident highlights the continued dangers faced by migrants attempting the perilous journey from Africa to Europe.

Details of the Shipwreck:

According to survivor testimonies and information provided by the IOM, the vessel departed from Al-Zawiya, Libya, late on 5 February 2026, carrying approximately 55 people. Around six hours into the journey, the overcrowded rubber boat began taking on water before capsizing north of the coastal town of Zuwara. Only two passengers both Nigerian women survived the disaster. One survivor lost her husband, while the other lost her two children, underscoring the profound human cost of the tragedy.

A Deadly Migration Route and Calls for Action:

The IOM described the incident as another grim reminder of the extreme risks along the central Mediterranean migration route, which remains one of the world’s deadliest. Human traffickers continue to exploit vulnerable and desperate migrants, placing them on unsafe and unseaworthy vessels with little regard for human life. The UN agency has renewed its call for stronger international cooperation to dismantle smuggling networks and to expand safe and legal migration pathways, stressing that such measures are essential to prevent further loss of life at sea.
