Fire Safety Crisis Sparks Reform:
The Sindh government has launched a significant overhaul of the province’s fire services, aiming to unify all firefighting operations under a single provincial command structure. The move follows a series of high-profile fire incidents, including the devastating blaze at Gul Plaza, which claimed lives and exposed systemic weaknesses in emergency response. Local authorities have acknowledged that Pakistan’s fire-fighting capacity has lagged behind international standards, with little fleet modernization since 2021.
Unified Command to Reduce Fragmentation:
Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah announced that the reform will integrate fragmented fire and rescue units spread across municipalities and departments into one provincial authority. Officials say this restructuring aims to streamline decision-making, reduce overlap, and enhance coordination in large-scale emergencies.
Fire Safety Enforcement and Building Regulations:
In the wake of recent incidents, regulators have tightened fire safety enforcement. The Sindh Building Control Authority recently ordered builders and property owners in Karachi to fix serious fire-safety deficiencies within days after mall infernos.
Victim Support and Long-Term Planning:
Following the Gul Plaza tragedy, the Sindh CM committed to compensation and rehabilitation efforts for affected families and shopkeepers, and pledged to reconstruct the fire-hit building. Additionally, a high-level provincial task force is reviewing a broad emergency services reorganisation to strengthen disaster management and response capabilities.
