Introduction:
Strategic Energy Infrastructure Approval:
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has approved the construction of a 22-kilometre power transmission line in Swat district to strengthen the integration of locally produced hydropower into the national grid. The project represents part of the province’s broader push for affordable and sustainable energy.
Technical and Economic Scope:
The transmission line will run from the Madyan Grid Station to the Khwaza Khela Grid Station, facilitating efficient transfer of hydropower generated by multiple ongoing projects. Provincial authorities expect this initiative to cut energy costs significantly and save billions annually.
Hydropower Potential in the Region:
Swat’s hydropower corridor is home to multiple hydropower schemes collectively targeted to add over 300 MW to the national grid within the next two years. These facilities are seen as vital for meeting demand and reducing dependence on costly thermal generation.
Long-Term Energy Vision:
Officials have emphasised that the new transmission infrastructure is a “game changer” for KP’s energy landscape, enabling the province to build its own transmission network and support future renewable energy integration.
